Lane's Arabic-English Lexicon

وِدٌّ

Root: ود

Full Definition

وِدٌّ and وُدٌّ and وَدٌّ and وَدِيدٌ A person loved, or beloved; an object of love; a friend; syn. خِبٌّ and حَبِيبٌ and صَدِيقٌ and مُحَبٌّ. (K: in the CK مُحِبٌّ.)
2 Also, and وَدُودٌ and وَدِيدٌ and وَادٌّ A person who loves; loving; affectionate: the first also used in a pl. sense, being [originally] an Verbal.Noun and the second used alike as masc. and fem.
3 Also, وُدٌّ and and , also written مَوَدٌّ , A man loving much; having much love or affection; very loving or affectionate.
4 Pl. أَوْدَادٌ, pl. of وِدٌّ, and also a pl. [of وُدٌّ] in the second of the above senses; and وَدَادٌ, [pl. of وَدٌّ or وَدِيدٌ] in the first of the above senses; and أَوُدٌّ, pl. of وُدٌّ in the second of the above senses; or of وِدٌّ; and أَوْدٌّ, [an irreg. pl., or quasi-pl. n., upon which I find no remark,] in the first of the above senses, or the second; and وُدَّادٌ, pl. of وَادٌّ; and أَوِدَّآءُ, pl. of وَدِيدٌ in the first of the above senses, or in the second; and أَوِدَّةٌ, also pl. of وَدِيدٌ in the second of the above senses; and وُدَدَآءُ, pl. of وَدُودٌ in the second of the above senses, [and the third]; and وَدِيدٌ is also mentioned as a pl. in the second of the above senses in the K; but this is probably a mistake for وِدَادٌ.
5 IAth says, that وُدٌّ , used as an epithet, is for ذُو وُدٍّ; but وِدٌّ does not require ذو to be understood, being syn. with صَدِيقٌ.
