تَتْرَى

Full Definition

تَتْرَى , and تَتْرًى, with and without tenween, and with ت substituted for the original incipient و, in the former whereof, which is the better, and the more common, pronounced by Hamzeh and Ibn-'Ámir and Ks with imáleh, [i. e. tetrè,] the ا [which is written ى] is a sign of the fem. gender, and in the latter whereof it is an ا of quasi-coördination, from وِتْرٌ in the sense of فَرْدٌ, They came following one another; one after another; syn. مُتَوَاتِرِينَ: or interruptedly. It is said in the Kur, [xxiii. 46,] ثَمَّ أَرْسَلْنَا رُسُلَنَا تَتْرَى, or تَتَرًى, Then we sent our apostles one after another: or interruptedly; at intervals: or making a long time to intervene between every two.
