Lane's Arabic-English Lexicon

ثَوَابٌ

Root: ثوب

Full Definition

ثَوَابٌ and مَثَابَةٌ and and مَثْوَبَةٌ , the last anomalous, and unknown to the Kilábees, who knew the second of these words, A recompense, compensation, requital, or reward, of obedience [to God]: or absolutely; for good and for evil; as appears from the words of the Kur, هَلْ ثُوِّبَ الكُفَّارُ [cited above, see 4]; but more especially and frequently, for good.
2 ثَوَابٌ is also used as a quasi-Verbal.Noun, in the sense of إِثَابَةٌ; and in this case, accord to the Koofees and Baghdádees, it may govern as a verb, [like the Verbal.Noun,] as in the saying, لِإَنَّ ثَوَابَ ٱللّهِ كُلَّ مُوَحِّدٍ جِنَانٌ مِنَ الفِرْدَوْسِ فِيهَا يُخَلَّدُ [For God's rewarding every believer in his unity will be the giving gardens of Paradise, wherein he will be made to abide for ever].
3 It signifies also Honey; i. e. the good that proceeds from bees.
4 And in like manner, [Rain; i. e.] the good that results from the winds. (A, TA. [See ثَائِبٌ.])
5 And Bees; because they return [to their hives].
