جَادَI
, Present.T يَجُودُ, Verbal.Noun جُودَةٌ and جَوْدَةٌ, It was, or became,
جَيِّد [i. e. good, goodly, approvable, or excellent; the verb being the contr. of
رَدُؤَ, as is implied in the A and K]: in this sense, accord. to some, of the class of قَالَ; accord. to others, of the class of قَرُبَ. [Also said of a man, meaning He was, or became, excellent, or egregious, in some quality; sometimes, though very rarely, in a quality that is disapproved.]
2 And جاد, of the class of قال, Present.T as above, Verbal.Noun جُودٌ, with damm, He was liberal, bountiful, munificent, or generous: or he affected, or constrained himself, to be generous: or he gave without being asked, to preserve the receiver from the ignominy of asking: or he gave what was meet to him to whom it was meet: or he gave what was meet to him to whom it was meet, not for a compensation; so that it has a more special signification than أَحْسَنَ. You say, جاد بِمَالِهِ [He was liberal, &c., with his property]: or جاد بِالمَالِ he affected, or constrained himself, to be generous with the property.
3 Hence, جاد بِنَفْسِهِ, Present.T as above, Verbal.Noun جَوْدٌ and جُؤُودٌ, He gave up his spirit, at death; like as one gives away his property; said of one in the agony of death: and he gave away his life, in war. And you say also, جَادَتْ نَفْسُهُ [His soul, or spirit, resigned itself, or departed]. (Msb in art. نفس.)
4 جاد المَطَرُ, Verbal.Noun جَوْدٌ, The rain was, or became, copious, or abundant. And جَادَتِ السَّمَآءُ, Verbal.Noun جَوْدٌ, with fet-h, The sky rained. And جَادَتِ العَيْنُ, Verbal.Noun جَوْدٌ and جُؤُودٌ, The eye shed many, or abundant, tears.
5 جاد said of a horse, Present.T as above, Verbal.Noun جُودَةٌ and جَوْدَةٌ; and , Verbal.Noun تَجْوِيدٌ; and , and ; He became fleet, or swift, and excellent, صَارَ رَائِعًا, فِى عَدْوِهِ in his running. [See an ex. in a verse cited voce دَامَ, in art. دوم.]

3 جِيدَ, Present.T يُجَادُ, Verbal.Noun جُوَادٌ, He thirsted, or became affected by thirst: or thirsted vehemently: (accord. to an explanation of جُوَادٌ in the K:) or was at the point of death, or destruction; as though destruction rained upon him.
4 [Hence,] إِنِّى أُجَادُ إِلَىلِقَائِكَ Verily I am affected with a longing desire to meet thee: or إِنِّى لَأُجَادُ إِلَيْكَ (K, TA [in the CK, erroneously, لَاَجادُ] Verily I am affected with a longing desire for thee, i. e., to meet thee, and am impelled towards thee: and يُجَادُإِلَى فُلَانَةَ He is affected with longing desire for such a female; like as you say يَظْمَأُ. One says also, جادهُ الَهَوى Love affected him with longing desire, (شَاقَهُ, L, K, in the CK شاقَّهُ,) and overcame him.
