خَلَّةٌ
A road between two roads.
2 A hole, perforation, or bore, that penetrates, or passes through, a thing, and is small: or, in a general sense: or a gap, or breach, in a booth of reeds or canes. [See also خَلَلٌ.]
3 [And hence,] The gap that is left by a person who has died: or the place, of a man, that is left vacant after his death. One says, of him who has lost a person by death, اَللّٰهُمَّ ٱخْلُفْ عَلَى أَهْلِهِ بِخَيْرٍ وَٱسْدُدْ خَلَّتَهُ, i. e. [O God, supply to his family, with that which is good, the place of him whom they have lost,] and fill up the gap which he has left by his death.
4 And The interval, or inter-
vening space, between the piercer, or thruster, and the pierced, or thrust: whence the saying, رَقَعَ
خَلَّةَ الفَارِسِ, explained in art. رقع.
5 [Hence also,] Want, or a want: poverty; need, straitness, or difficulty. One says, بِهِ خَلَّةٌ شَدِيدَةٌ He has pressing, or severe, need or straitness or difficulty. And سَدَّ ٱللّٰهُ خَلَّتَهُ May God supply his want. And it is said in a prov., الخَلَّةُ تَدْعُو إِلَى السَّلَّةِ Want invites to theft.
def.2 I. q. خَصْلَةٌ; both signify A property, quality, nature, or disposition: and a habit, or custom: [and app. also a practice, or an action:] in a man: pl. خِلَالٌ. One says, فُلَانٌ خَلَّتُهُ حَسَنَةٌ [Such a one, his nature, or disposition, is good]. And hence, خَيْرُ خِلَالِ الصَّائِمِ السِّوَاكُ [The best of the habits, or customs, of the faster is the use of the tooth-stick].
