خَاطَ

Root: خيط

Form: 1

Full Definition

خَاطَI , first pers. خِطْتُ, Present.T يَخِيطُ, Verbal.Noun خِيَاطَةٌ, or this is a simple subst., and the Verbal.Noun is خَيْطٌ, which is said in the K to be syn. with خِيَاطَةٌ, but this last is a mistake for خِيَاطٌ as signifying “thread,” or “a thread,” though خِيَاطٌ is also syn. with خِيَاطَةٌ, He sewed, sewed together, or sewed up, a garment, or piece of cloth; as also خيّطهُ , Verbal.Noun تَخْيِيطٌ.
2 [Hence,] خَاطَ بَعِيرًا بِبَعِيرٍ He coupled a camel with a camel [by tying the end of the halter of one to the tail of the other].
3 خَاطَتِ الحَيَّةُ, Verbal.Noun خَيْطٌ, The serpent ran along upon the ground.
4 خاط إِلَيْهِ He passed by him, or it, [or to, or towards, him or it,] once: or خاط he passed along quickly: and so and اِخْتَطَى. It is said by Kr to be formed by transposition from الخَطْوُ: but this is a mistake; for, were it so, they would have said, خاط خَوْطَةً, not خَيْطَةً. Accord. to Lth, خاط وَاحِدَةً means He made his journey [or a journey] without interruption. In the A it is said that خاط فُلَانٌ means Such a one journeyed on, not pausing for anything: and in like manner, خاط إِلَى مَقْصِدِهِ [He journeyed on, not pausing for anything, to his place, or object, of aim].
