Lane's Arabic-English Lexicon

شَبْعَانُ

Root: شبع

Full Definition

شَبْعَانُ Satiated, sated, or satisfied in stomach; as also شَابِعٌ , but this is allowable only in poetry: fem. of the former شَبْعَى, and شَبْعَانَةٌ is sometimes used: the pl. of شبعان and of شبعى is شِبَاعٌ and شَبَاعَى. [Hence the saying,] قَوْمٌ إِذَا جَاعُوا كَاعُوا وَتَرَاهُمْ سِبَاعًا إِذَا كَانُوا شِبَاعًا [A people who, when they are hungry, are fearful and cowardly, and thou seest them to be beasts of prey when they are satiated].
2 [And hence,] شَبْعَى الخَلْخَالِ A woman who fills up the anklet by reason of her fatness. And شَبْعَى السِّوَارِ Who fills up the bracelet by reason of fatness. And شَبْعَى الوِشَاحِ A woman large in the belly. And شَبْعَى الدِّرْعِ A woman bulky in make: in the K erroneously written شَبْعَى الذِّرَاعِ, and expl. as meaning bulky in the forearm.
