Full Definition

شَمِمْتُI , Present.T أَشَمُّ; and شَمَمْتُ, Present.T أَشُمُّ; the latter mentioned by AO; third pers. of each شَمَّ; Verbal.Noun شَمُّ and شَمِيمٌ, which are of both verbs, and شِمِّيمَى, mentioned by Z alone; I smelt, i. e. perceived by the nose, a thing, or an odour; and signifies the same; (S, Msb, K, TA; [اَشْمَمْتُهُ in the CK is a mistranscription for اِشْتَمَمْتُهُ;]) and also, and , thus in the copies of the K, but correctly شَمَّمْتُ : (TA: [both, however, are mentioned in the CK: the former like قَصَّيْتُ for قَصَّصْتُ:]) or الشَّىْءَ signifies شَمِمْتُهُ فِى مُهْلَةٍ [I smelt the thing leisurely, or gently]: or الشَّىْءَ and both signify he put the thing near to his nose in order that he might draw in its odour.
