طَرْقٌI
signifies The beating [a thing], or striking [it, in any manner, and with anything]; this being the primary meaning: or with the
مِطْرَقَة, which is the implement of the blacksmith and of the artificer [with which he beats the iron], and the rod, or stick, with which one beats wool [or hair] to loosen or separate it: and the slapping with the hand. You say, طَرَقَ البَابَ, Present.T
ـُ Verbal.Noun طَرْقٌ, He knocked [or knocked at] the door. طَرَقَ الصُّوفَ, or الشَّعَرَ, Present.T as above, and so the Verbal.Noun, He beat the wool, or the hair, with the rod, or stick, called
مِطْرَقَة, to loosen it, or separate it: or he plucked it [so as to loosen it, or separate it]. اُطْرُقِى
وَمِيشِى, a prov., and occurring in a verse of Ru-beh, [originally addressed to a woman,] and [lit.] meaning Beat thou the wool with the stick, and mix the hair with the wool, is said to him who confuses or confounds, in his speech, and practises various modes, or manners, therein. And you say also, طَرَقَ الحَدِيدَةَ

he beat it much, or vehemently. And طَرَقَهُ بِكَفِّهِ, Verbal.Noun as above, He slapped him with his hand. And طَرَقْتُ
الطَّرِيقَ
I travelled [or beat] the road. [And hence, app.,] طَرْقٌ signifies also The being quick of pace; [probably as an Verbal.Noun;] or quickness of going along. And طُرِقَتِ الأَرْضُ
The ground was beaten so as to be rendered even, or easy to be travelled; and trodden with the feet. And طَرَقَ الدَّوَابُّ المَآءَ بِالرِّجْلِ حَتَّى تُكَدِّرَهُ [The beasts beat the water with the foot so as to render it turbid, or muddy]: or طَرَقَتِ الإِبِلُ المَآءَ, Present.T as above,

3 Also The stallion's covering the she-camel; and so طُرُوقٌ; and طِرَاقٌ likewise [app. another Verbal.Noun of طَرَقَ, as its syn. ضِرَابٌ is of ضَرَبَ]: or his leaping her, and covering her. You say, طَرَقَ القَحْلُ النَّاقَةَ, Present.T ـُ Verbal.Noun طَرْقٌ, or طُرُوقٌ, or both, The stallion covered the she-camel: or leaped the she-camel, and covered her.
4 And [The practising of pessomancy;] i. q. ضَرْبٌ بِالحَصَى, which is performed by women, or by a diviner; a certain mode of divination: or [the practising of geomancy; i. e.] a man's making lines, or marks, upon the ground, with two fingers, and then with one finger, and saying, اِبْنَىْ عِيَانْ أَسْرِعَا البَيَانْ: (AZ, O, TA: [see this saying explained, with another description of the process, in the first paragraph of art. خط:]) or it is the making lines, or marks, upon the sand: you say, طَرَقَ, Present.T ـُ Verbal.Noun طَرْقٌ, He made lines, or marks, with a finger, in divining. [See the last sentence in art. جبت.] Also The diviner's mixing cotton with wool when divining.
5 And طَرَقْنَا النَّعْجَةَ, Present.T ـُ Verbal.Noun طَرْقٌ, We branded the ewe with the mark called طِرَاق.
