الفَرَسُ, with damm, signifies the horse became such as is termed
عَتِيق [q. v.]. The meaning of The state, or act, of preceding, or having precedence, [assigned to the Verbal.Noun عِتْقٌ,] is said to be the turning-point of the art.: and hence, عَتَقَ الخَيْلَ, said of a horse, means He preceded the other horses, and became safe, or secure, from them. And عَتَقْتُ الشَّىْءَ, Present.T

2 عَتَقَ العَبْدُ, Present.T ـِ Verbal.Noun عِتْقٌ and عَتْقٌ, or the former is a simple subst. and the latter is an Verbal.Noun, as also عَتَاقٌ and عَتَاقَةٌ, The slave became free; the slave passed forth from the state of slavery. And sometimes عِتْقٌ is used in the place of إِعْتَاقٌ; and so is عَتَاقٌ, in the saying حَلَفَ بِالعَتَاقِ [He swore by emancipation]: but see 4. [Hence,] one says, فُلَانٌ مَوْلَى عَتَاقَةٍ [Such a one is a freed slave]. (S, O, K. [See also عَتِيقٌ.])
3 عَتَقَتْ مِنَ الصِّبَا is said of a girl when she has attained to the marriageable state [meaning She has passed forth from the state of childhood]. And عَتَقَتْ, Present.T ـِ She attained to the commencement of the state of puberty: and as some say, had not married: [or] she passed forth from the state, or condition, of serving her father and mother, and from being possessed by a husband.
4 عَتَقَ بَعْدَ ٱسْتِعْلَاجٍ, Present.T ـِ He became thin, or fine, or delicate, in his external skin, after having been coarse and rough; as also عَتُقَ.
5 عَتَقَ, said of anything, It attained its utmost point, reach, or degree.
6 عَتَقَتِ البَكْرَةُ The young she-camel became free from القُرْحَة [or purulent pustules in the mouth] and العُرَّة [i. e. mange, or scab]: until this is the case, she is not reckoned a بَكْرَة: so said an Arab of the desert.

ـِ Verbal.Noun عِتْقٌ; and عَتُقَ; It, or the property, or cattle, became in a good, right, or proper, state.

9 عَتُقَ الشَّىْءُ, Verbal.Noun عَتَاقَةٌ; and عَتَقَ, Present.T ـُ and ـِ; The thing became old. Both of these verbs, in this sense, are said of clarified butter. And you say, عَتُقَتِ الخَمْرُ; and عَتَقَت, Present.T ـِ Verbal.Noun عَتْقٌ and عِتْقٌ; The wine became old and good.
10 عَتَقَتْ عَلَيْهِ يَمِينٌ, Present.T ـِ; (S, K; in one of my copies of the S ـُ;) and عَتُقَتْ; The oath was binding on him: or was old, and binding on him; as though he kept it [long], not violating it.
def.2 عَتَقَهُ بِفِيهِ, Verbal.Noun عَتْقٌ, He bit it: or عَتَّقَ بِفِيهِ he bit with his front teeth: and [simply] he bit: [both are app. correct; for it is said that] تَعْتِيقٌ signifies the act of biting.
