أَنْقَدُ

Full Definition

أَنْقَدُ The hedge-hog; القُنْفُذُ; a proper name, like أَسَامَةُ applied to the lion: as also الأَنْقَدُ; but some disallow the prefixing of the art.; and الأَنْقَذُ. Hence the saying, بَاتَ بِلَيْلِ أَنْقَدَ, or بِلَيْلَةِ أَنْقَدَ, He passed the night of the hedge-hog; i. e. sleepless: because the hedge-hog remains sleepless all night: and أَسْرَى مِنْ أَنْقَدَ [A greater journeyer by night than the hedge-hog].
2 أَنْقَدُ لَيْلٍ A calumniator; a slanderer; as also قُنْفُذُ لَيْلٍ. (L, art. قنفذ.)
3 Also, الأَنْقَدُ [L, K,) and الإِنْقِدَانُ The tortoise: or the latter, the male tortoise: as also with ذ.
