إِفْتَرَشَ

Full Definition

إِفْتَرَشَVIII see 1, first quarter, in five places; and latter half, in two places.
2 افترش لِسَانَهُ [lit.] He expanded his tongue: i. e. he spoke in whatsoever manner he desired.
3 افترشهُ He trod upon him or it: [as though he made him or it a carpet or a bed:] from الفَرْشُ and الفِرَاشُ.
4 [Hence,] افترش الطَّرِيقَ He went, or travelled, along the road.
5 [Hence also,] افترش ٱمْرَأَةً He compressed a woman.
6 And He took to wife a woman. One says, افترش كَرِيمَةً He took to wife a female of high birth.
7 [Hence also,] افترش عِرْضَهُ lit. He made his honour as a bed for himself to tread upon; i. e., he treated his honour as a thing which it was allowable to attack, by speaking evil of him. [See also 4, second sentence.]
8 And اِفْتَرَشَتْنَا السَّمآءٌ بِالمَطَرِ The sky assailed us with rain.
9 And افترش المَالَ He took the مال [i. e. property, or cattle, &c.,] wrongfully, or by force.
10 And افترش أَثَرَهُ He followed his footsteps; he tracked him.

def.2 اِفْتَرَشَ [in one of my copies of the S, اُفْتُرِشَ, which is also allowable, as the verb in the act. form is trans. as well as intrans.,] It became spread, or expanded; as also ; said of a garment or the like.
