Full Definition

ابتهرVIII He arrogated to himself, or professed, a thing falsely. El-Akhtal says, وَمَا بِى إِنْ مَدَحْتُهُمُ ٱبْتِهَارُ And there is not in me, if I praise them, false profession: or ابتهر signifies he said what was false, and swore to it.
2 He said that he had transgressed, or acted vitiously, or committed adultery or fornication, when he had not done so. And ابتهر بِذَنْبٍ He asserted himself to have committed a crime, or sin, when he had not done so.
3 ابتهرها He asserted falsely that he had had sexual intercourse with her: ابتارها signifies “ he asserted the same with truth: ” or ابتهر signifies he charged, or upbraided, a person with that which was in him; and ابتار, “ he charged, or upbraided, with that which was not in him. ” See an ex. voce بَارَ in art. بور.
4 Also He mentioned her in his poetry. اُبْتُهِرَ بِفُلَانَةَ He became, or was rendered, notorious, or infamous, on account of such a woman [with whom he was said to have had an illicit connexion].
