Full Definition

خَرَقَهُI , Present.T ـِ and ـُ the former of which is the more chaste, Verbal.Noun خَرْقٌ, He made a hole in it, perforated it, pierced it, or bored it; syn. جَابَهُ [in this sense, as well as in another to be explained below], (K, [in the CK, erroneously, جاءَ بهِ,]) and ثَقَبَهُ: and he cut it [so as to make a hole or a slit in it]: and he rent it, or tore it. You say, خَرَقَ الثَوْبَ, Present.T ـِ [and ـُ], Verbal.Noun as above, He [made a hole in, or] rent, or tore, the garment, or piece of cloth; and الخُفَّ [the boot]; and the like. And خَرَقَ الصَّخْرَةَ He made a hole in the rock; syn. جَابَهُ. (A in art. جوب.) [And خَرَقَ الحَائِطَ He made a hole in, or through, the wall: see خَرْقٌ, below.] And خَرَقَهُ بِالمِثْقَبِ He made a hole in it or through it, perforated it, pierced it, or bored it, with a drill or the like; syn. ثَقَبَهُ. (Msb in art. ثقب.) خَرَقَ السَّفِينَةَ [He made a hole in the ship], in the Kur xviii. 70, means that he did so by taking out, from the ship, with an axe, a plank, or two planks.
2 [Hence,] خَرَقَ الأَرْضَ, or المَفَازَةَ, He traversed, crossed, or cut through by journeying, the earth, or land, or the desert; syn. قَطَعَهَا; or جَابَهَا; so as to reach the furthest part thereof. [See also 8.] It is said in the Kur [xvii. 39], إِنَّكَ لَنْ تَخْرِقَ الأَرْضَ, meaning, For thou shalt not reach the extremities of the earth: or, accord. to Az, thou shalt not traverse the earth in length and breadth: or it means thou shalt not bore through the earth, so as to reach the end thereof: or thou shalt not make a hole in the earth by thy vehement treading: accord. to one reading, لن تَخْرُقَ.
3 [And خَرَقَتِ الرِّيحُ The wind passed along: and blew: for] the Verbal.Noun خَرْقٌ signifies the passing of the wind: and the blowing thereof. [See also 7 and 8.]
4 خَرَقَ الكَذِبَ He forged, or feigned, the lie; as also ↓اخترقهُ. It is said in the Kur vi. 100, وَخَرَقُوا لَهُ بَنِينَ وَبَنَاتٍ, i. e. And they have feigned Him to have, or falsely attributed to Him, sons and daughters. And خَرَقَ [alone, the object being understood], Verbal.Noun as above, signifies He lied; told a lie: and تخرّق he forged, or feigned, a lie.

def.2 خَرِقَتِ الشَّاةُ, Present.T ـَ Verbal.Noun خَرَقٌ, The sheep had in its ear a خَرْق, i. e. a round hole or perforation.

def.3 خَرِقَ فِى البَيْتِ, Present.T ـَ Verbal.Noun خُرُوقٌ, or خَرَقٌ; and خَرَقَ, Verbal.Noun خُرُوقٌ; He remained in the house, or tent, not quitting it.
2 And خَرِقَ, Present.T ـَ Verbal.Noun خَرَقٌ, said of a gazelle, or young gazelle, when hunted, or when overtaken by the dog, It was frightened, (Msb, K, TA, [in the CK, اَنْ يَعْرَقَ is erroneously put for أَنْ يَفْرَقَ,]) so as to be unable to go away, or so as to be unable to rise, and clave to the ground: and in like manner said of a bird, it became frightened, or impatient, so as to be unable to fly away.
3 And hence, the same verb, with the same Present.T, and the same Verbal.Noun, said of a man, He became confounded, or perplexed, and unable to see his right course; or he became bereft of his reason or intellect, because of fear, or of shame: or he was confounded, perplexed, or amazed, [for يَتَهَيَّبَ in the CK, I read يَبْهَتَ, as in other copies of the K and in the TA,] opening his eyes, and looking: and he remained confounded, or perplexed, and unable to see his right course, by reason of anxiety, or of hardship, or distress. وَقَعَ فَخَرِقَ [He fell down and clave to the ground], occurring in a trad, means he fell down dead.

def.4 خَرِقَ, Present.T ـَ Verbal.Noun خَرَقٌ; and خَرُقَ, Present.T ـُ [of which خُرْقٌ, said in the S and Msb to be a simple subst., may be the Verbal.Noun, like as حُسْنٌ is of حَسْنَ;] He was rough, ungentle, clumsy, or awkward, in doing, or making, a thing: and he was unskilful in work, and in the management of affairs: and he was foolish; stupid; or unsound, or deficient, in intellect or understanding: or he was ignorant: or the latter verb signifies he knew not his work with his hand, or his handicraft. And خَرُقَ بِالشَّىْءِ He was ignorant of the thing, and did it not well.
