سِمْطٌ

Full Definition

سِمْطٌ A thread, or string, having upon it beads or pearls; otherwise it is called سِلْكٌ: a string of beads or the like; so called because it is hung, or suspended; a single string thereof; like يَكْ رَسَنْ [in Persian]; a necklace of two strings thereof being called ذَاتُ سِمْطَيْنِ: or it signifies, or signifies also, a necklace longer than the مِخْنَقَة: or [simply] a necklace: pl. سُمُوطٌ: which also signifies the things that are suspended (مَعَالِيقُ) from necklaces.
2 A thong, or strap, that is suspended from the horse's saddle; sing. of سُمُوطٌ.
3 The redundant part of the turban, which is left hanging down upon the breast and the shoulder-blades: pl. as above.
4 A coat of mail which the horseman hangs upon the hinder part of his horse.
5 A trail, or long and elevated tract, (حَبْل,) of sand, regularly disposed, as though it were a necklace.
