Full Definition

ضَمَدَI , Present.T ـُ and ـِ Verbal.Noun ضَمْدٌ; and ضمّدهُ , Verbal.Noun تَضْمِيدٌ; He bound the wound with a ضِمَاد or ضِمَادَة i. e. a bandage, or fillet, or kerchief. This is the primary signification. And ضَمَدَ رَأْسَهُ, or ضمّدهُ بِضِمَادٍ, He wound a piece of rag round his head, after anointing it, or wetting it with water: and ضمّد رَأْسَهُ, Verbal.Noun تَضْمِيدٌ, He bound his head with a fillet, or bandage, or a kerchief, or a piece of cloth, not a turban. And ضَمَدَ الجُرْحَ, Verbal.Noun ضَمْدٌ, also signifies He applied a remedy [or dressing] to the wound, without bandaging it. And ضمّد عَيْنَيْهِ بِالصَّبِرِ He applied aloes to his eyes. And ضَمَدَهَ بِالزَّعْفَرَانِ وَالصَّبِرِ He smeared him, or it, over, [or poulticed him, or it,] with saffron and aloes.
2 And اُضْمُدْ عَلَيْكَ ثِيَابَكَ Bind thou upon thee thy garments, and عِمَامَتَكَ [thy turban]. And أُجِدْ ضَمْدَ هٰذَا العِدْلِ Make thou good the binding of this half-load.
3 And ضَمَدَهُ He struck him, or hit him, on his head with a staff or stick: sometimes used in this sense: or he cut, or wounded, him or it, i. e. his head, in the place of the turban, with a sword; syn. عَمَّمَهُ.
4 ضَمْدٌ also signifies The treating with gentleness, or blandishment; soothing, coaxing, wheedling, or cajoling; or striving, endeavouring, or desiring, to do so.
5 And ضَمَدَتْ, aor ـِ and ـُ Verbal.Noun ضَمْدٌ and ضِمَادٌ, She took to herself two friends, or secret friends, or amorous associates, together: or she took another man beside her husband as her friend, or secret friend, or amorous associate; or two other men: or she associated as a friend with two or three men in a time of drought, in order that she might eat with one and then with another so as to satiate herself. And ضَمَدَتْهُ, aor, as above, She took him as her friend [or lover]. Aboo-Dhu-eyb says, تُرِيدِينَ كَيْمَا تَضْمِدِينِى وَخَالِدًا وَهَلْ يُجْمَعُ السَّيْفَانِ وَيْحَكِ فِى غِمْدِ [Thou desirest to take me as thy lover together with Khálid: but can the two swords be combined in one scabbard?]. And one says, ضَمَدَاهَا They both associated as friends [or lovers] with her, or made love to her.

2 And ضَمِدَ عَلَيْهِ, Present.T ـَ Verbal.Noun ضَمَدٌ, He bore rancour, malevolence, malice, or spite, against him: or held fast rancour, &c., against him in his heart. And He was angry with him: or vehemently enraged against him and angry with him: or he was enraged against him; i. e. one over whom he had power to vent his rage.
