Full Definition

عِلَاقَةٌ : see عَلَقٌ, last quarter; and عَلَاقَةٌ, first and second sentences. It signifies The suspensory thong or the like, of the knife and of other things; it is of the bow, (S, O, [see also مُعَلَّقٌ,]) and of the whip and the like, as the sword, and the shield, and the drinking-cup or bowl, and of the book, or copy of the Kur-án, &c., and of the water-skin; (M voce شِنَاقٌ;) that of the whip being the thong that is in the handle thereof. See also مِعْلَاقٌ. [Also The suspensory stalk of a fruit.]
2 And A surname, or by-name; because it is attached to a man; as also عَلَاقِيَةٌ , of which the pl. is عُلَاقَى: the pl. of عِلَاقَةٌ is عَلَائِقُ.
