غَيَّانُ , [or the first is an act. part. n., and the others are intensive epithets,] Erring; deviating from the right way or course, or from that which is right: and suffering disappointment; or failing of attaining his desire: [&c.: ] and the first signifies also perishing: the pl. of the first is غُوَاةٌ, like قُضَاةٌ pl. of قَاضٍ, and غَاوَونَ. الغَاوُونَ in the saying وَٱلشُّعَرَآءُ يَتَّبِعُهُمُ الغَاوُونَ [in the Kur xxvi. 224] means The devils: or those, of mankind, who err: or those who love the poet when he satirizes a people, or party, by saying that which is not allowable: or those who love him for his praising them for that which is not in them.
