طوّلهُII , Verbal.Noun تَطْوِيلٌ; and , and , Verbal.Noun إِطَالَةٌ; both signify the same; He elongated it; extended it; lengthened it; or made it long, or tall or high; syn. مَدَّهُ, and جَعَلَهُ طَوِيلًا. You say, طَوَّلْتُ الحَدِيدَةَ I elongated, or lengthened, the piece of iron. And اطال ٱللّٰهُ بَقَآءَهُ God extended, or prolonged, his continuance [in life]; or may God extend, &c. And اطال المَجْلِسَ He extended, or prolonged, the time of the assembly. And طوَّل لِلْفَرَسِ, or لِلدَّابَّةِ, He slackened [or lengthened] the tether, or rope, of the horse, or of the beast, in the place of pasture, or that it might pasture [more largely]: and اطال لَهَا الطِّوَلَ and الطِّيَلَ [signify the same]. And [hence] طوّل لَهُ He granted him a delay, or respite; said of God: and فِى الأَمْرِ means التَّطْوِيلُ فِيهِ; [i. e.] طاولهُ signifies he delayed, or deferred, with him, فِى الأَمْرِ [in the affair], or فِى الدَّيْنِ [in the case of the debt] and العِدَةِ [the promise]. [And طوّل عَلَيْهِ and تطوّل He was prolix, or tedious, to him: see 2 in art. بسق; and see an ex. of the former voce حَوْزٌ.]
