مَحْمِلٌ

Root: حمل

Full Definition

مَحْمِلٌ [of which the primary signification is A place of bearing or carrying], or مِحْمَلٌ [which primarily signifies An instrument for bearing or carrying], or the latter is allowable, The [kind of vehicle called] هَوْدَج; as also حِمْلٌ : or the large هودج termed حَجَّاجِىٌّ: or a pair of dorsers, or panniers, or oblong chests, (شِقَّانِ,) upon a camel, in which are borne two equal loads, [and which, with a small tent over them, compose a هودج;] first made use of by El-Hajjáj Ibn-Yoosuf Eth-Thakafee: one of the مَحَامِل of the pilgrims: مَحَامِلُ being the pl. Hence, مَحَامِلِىٌّ A seller of مَحَامِل. [What is now particularly termed the محمل (vulgarly pronounced مَحْمَل) of the pilgrims is an ornamented هودج, which is borne by a camel, but without a rider, and is regarded as the royal banner of the caravan; such as is described and figured in my work on the Modern Egyptians. (See also مَحَارَةٌ, in art. حور.)] Its application to The camel that bears the محمل is tropical. [See also حِمْلٌ. The assertion that it signifies also the silk covering that is sent every year for the Kaabeh is erroneous. This covering is sent from Cairo, with the baggage of the chief of the Egyptian pilgrim-caravan.]
2 Also مَحْمِلٌ, or مِحْمَلٌ , A basket (زِنْبِيل) in which grapes are carried to the place where they are to be dried; and so حَامِلَةٌ .
3 One says also, مَا عَلَى فُلَانٍ مَحْمِلٌ There is no ground of reliance upon such a one; syn. مُعْتَمَدٌ: or no relying, or reliance: or no ground for imposing upon such a one the accomplishment of one's wants. And مَا عَلَى البَعِيرِ مَحْمِلٌ مِنْ ثِقَلِ الحِمْلِ [There is no ground of reliance, or no relying, upon the camel, by reason of the heaviness of the load.]
