Verbal.Noun مَدٌّ; and مَدَّ بِهِ; and
; [or this has an intensive or a frequentative signification;] and

, or ماددهُ, Verbal.Noun مُمَادَّةٌ and مِدَادٌ; He drew it ; pulled it: strained it: extended it by drawing or pulling; stretched it. You say also مَدَّ القَوْسَ [He drew the bow]; (S, Msb, K, in art. نزع;) and مَدَّ مِنَ البِئْرِ [He drew water from the well]. (S, K, art. متح.) [Hence, app., مَدَّ بِأَرْفَادِى: see رِفْدٌ.]
2 قَائِلُ كَلِمَةِ الزُّورِ وَالَّذِى يَمُدُّ بِحَبْلِهَا فِى الإِثْمِ سَوَآءٌ [The utterer of falsehood and he who transmits it are in respect of the sin alike]: a trad. of 'Alee; in which the utterer of the falsehood is likened to him who fills the bucket in the lower part of the well, and the relater thereof to him who draws the rope at the top.
3 مَدَّ He extended, or stretched forth, his hand or arm, foot or leg, &c.
4 بَيْنَنَا We drew, pulled, strained, or stretched, it between us, or together. [But in a copy of the M, it is تَمَادَدْنَاهُ.]
5 مَدَّ الحَرْفَ, Present.Tمَدُدَ
Verbal.Noun مَدٌّ, He lengthened the letter.
6 مَدَّ صَوْتَهُ He prolonged, or strained, his voice [as the Arab does in chanting]: and فِى الصَّوْتِ عِنْدَ الوَعِيدِ [He strained the voice in threatening]. (K, art. نمر.)
7 مَدَّ, Verbal.Noun مَدٌّ, It was, or became, stretched, and raised,
إِلَى شَىْءٍ
towards a thing.
8 مَدَّ بَصَرَهُ إِلَى شَىْءٍ, Present.Tمَدُدَ
[Verbal.Noun مَدٌّ,] He stretched, and raised, his sight towards a thing.
9 مَدَدْتُ عَيْنِى إِلَى كَذَا I looked at such a thing desirously.
10 مَدَّهَ, Present.Tمَدُدَ
Verbal.Noun مَدٌّ, He expanded it, or stretched it out: he extended it, elongated it, or lengthened it.
11 مَدّ ٱللّٰهُ الأَرْضَ God expanded, or stretched out, and made plain, or level, the earth.
12 مَدَّ ٱللّٰهُ الظِّلَّ God extended, or stretched forth, the shade. See 8.
13 مَدَّ ٱللّٰهُ فِى عُمْرِهِ God made his life long; as also

14 مَدَّ ٱللّٰهُ فِى عُمْرِكَ May God make thy life long!
15 مُدَّ فِى عُمْرِهِ He had his life lengthened.
16 الأَجَلَ, Verbal.Noun إِمْدَادٌ, He deferred, or postponed, the term, or period of duration.
17 لَهُ فِى الأَجَلِ He deferred, or postponed, to him the term, or his term.
18 مَدَّهُ, Present.Tمَدُدَ
Verbal.Noun
مَدٌّ; and
, Verbal.Noun إِمْدَادٌ; but the latter is little used; He made him to continue; to go on long; left him, or let him alone, long, or for a while; granted him a delay, or respite. Ex. مَدَّهُ فِى غَيِّهِ, and
, He made him to continue, &c., in his error. And in like manner, مَدَّ ٱللّٰهُ لَهُ فِى العَذَابِ God made him to continue, or go on long, in a state of punishment. See also 3.
19 مَدَّ فِى السَّيْرِ He made much advance in journeying.
20 مَدَّهُ, Verbal.Noun مَدَدٌ and مِدَادٌ, He made it much in quantity; increased it.
21 مَدَّ, Present.Tمَدُدَ

; both of which verbs are also used transitively: or became much in quantity, copious, or abundant, in the days of the torrents; as also

22 وَادِى كَذَا يَمُدُّ فِى نَهْرِ كَذَا Such a valley flows into and increases such a river.
23 مَدَّهُ, Present.Tمَدُدَ
Verbal.Noun مَدٌّ; and
; It entered into it, and increased it, or made it copious or abundant: it flowed into it, and increased it, replenished it, or made it copious or abundant: it fed it, i. e., another well: [see an ex. in a verse cited in art. غرو, conj. 3]: both these verbs are also used intransitively.

25 مَدَّ القَوْمَ, [Present.Tمَدُدَ
Verbal.Noun مَدٌّ,] He became an auxiliary to the people: and مَدَدْنَاهُمْ
We became auxiliaries to them: somewhat differing from
, which signifies We aided them, or succoured them, by others than ourselves: you say, بِمَدَدٍ
I aided him, and strengthened him, [or increased his numbers and strength,] with an army: and الأَمِيرُ جُنْدَهُ بِالخَيْلِ وَالرِّجَالِ
The commander aided, or succoured, his army with cavalry and infantry, or with horses and men: and بِمَالٍ كَثِيرٍ
He aided them with, or, as some say, gave them, much wealth: and [it is said in the Kur, lii. 22,] وَأَمْدَدْنَاهُمْ بِفَاكِهَةٍ And We will increase their provision time after time with fruit: or with relation to evil, you say مَدَدْتُهُ; and with relation to good, : so says Yoo: this is generally the case; and the following are examples: أَمْدَدْنَاهُمْ بِفَاكِهَةٍ [explained above]: and نَمُدُّهُمْ مِنَ العَذَابِ [Kur, xix. 82,] We will prolong and increase to them punishment: but Z relates, that Akh said the reverse, like وَعَدَ and أَوْعَدَ: the usage of the Arabs, however, does not accord with either of these assertions.
26 مَدَّ It became full, and rose.
27 مَدَّ السِّرَاجَ, (Present.Tمَدُدَ
A, [Verbal.Noun مَدٌّ,]) He put oil into the lamp.
28 مَدَّ الدَّوَاةَ, (Present.Tمَدُدَ
Verbal.Noun مَدٌّ, Msb,) and
, He put ink into the receptacle thereof; he increased its water, and its ink.
29 In like manner, مَدَّ القَلَمَ, and , He supplied the reed-pen with ink.
30 مَدَّهُ مُدَّةً مِنَ الدَّوَاةِ, Present.Tمَدُدَ
; and مُدَّةً is also allowable; or simply مَدَّهُ and أَمَدَّهُ; He gave him a dip of ink from the receptacle thereof with a reed-pen.
