Full Definition

أَزَبُّ Downy: and, applied to a man, having much hair: or having much and long hair: or, applied to a man, having much hair in the ears and eyebrows: and having much hair on the fore arms and the eyebrows and eyes: or, thus applied, having much hair on the chest: and, applied to a camel, having much fur: or having much fur on the face: or having much hair on the face and under the lower jaw: or, in the ears and on the eyes: or having much hair on the face and body: and زُبَيْبٌ is a shortened dim. thereof: fem. زَبَّآءُ, applied to a woman as meaning having much hair in the eyebrows and on the fore arms and the hands: and to an ear as meaning having much hair: pl. زُبٌّ. It is said in a prov., كُلُّ أَزَبَّ نَفُورٌ [Every one, of camels, that has much hair on the face &c. is wont to take fright, and run away at random]: for the camel thinks what he sees upon his eyes to be a person seeking him, and consequently takes fright, and runs away at random: the camel to which this epithet applies is seldom, or never, other than نفور; because there grow upon his eyebrow small hairs, and when the wind strikes them he takes fright, and runs away at random.
2 الأَزَبُّ is a name of One of the devils: mention is made in a trad. of a certain devil named أَزَبُّ العَقَبَةِ: but in the L, and in the Seeret El-Halabee, it is written إِزْبُ العَقَبَةِ: and it is said to be a serpent. (TA in art. ازب.)
3 الزَّبَّآءُ The اِسْت [i. e. podex, or anus], with its hair.
4 عَامٌ أَزَبُّ A year abundant in herbage.
5 يَوْمٌ أَزَبُّ: see أَحَصُّ, in two places.
6 جَيْشٌ أَزَبُّ An army having many spears.
7 مَسْأَلَةٌ زَبَّآءُ ذَاتُ وَبَرٍ A dubious and difficult question: likened to the she-camel that [has much hair and fur upon the face &c., and consequently] is wont to take fright, and run away at random.
8 And دَاهِيَةٌ زَبَّآءُ A calamity, or misfortune, hard to be borne, severe, and abominable; like شَعْرَآءُ and وَبْرَآءُ. (S and A and TA in art. شعر.) Hence the prov., جَآءَبِالشَّعْرَآءِ الزَّبَّآءِ [He brought to pass that which was a calamity hard to be borne, &c.]
