أَلْوَثُ

Full Definition

أَلْوَثُ A man slow, or tardy.
2 دِيمَةٌ لَوْثَاءُ [A lasting, or continuous, and still, rain] that lays, or mixes, the plants, part upon part, like as straw is mixed with the kind of trefoil called قَتّ: but this explanation is disapproved by AM.
3 سَحَابَةٌ لَوْثَاءُ A slow cloud: such a cloud is the longest in raining.
4 أَلْوَثُ Slow and heavy in tongue; slow in speech, and heavy in tongue: fem. لَوْثَاءُ, [pl. لُوتٌ].
5 A man weak in mind, or understanding: from لَوْثٌ, as signifying “ weak, incomplete, evidence. ”
6 أَلْوَثُ, like أَثْوَلُ, Stupid; foolish; of little sense; as also مُلْتَاثٌ : stupid, foolish, or of little sense, and cowardly: pl. لُوثٌ.
7 Languid; flaccid: applied to a man.

def.2 Strong; powerful; vigorous. Thus the word bears two contrary significations.
